Jim and Dad - I just talked to you and got dropped because of poor signal. Please inquire of the travel experts with your group if they know how I can obtain a travel permit to Tibet. From what I gather from web research, it does not appear to be difficult to obtain one, but it is confusing as to *where* and *how* they can be obtained. It's not a visa that I can get from the embassy. From what I've read, I believe I need an "Alien Travel Permit" and some sites say they are issued by the police (Public Security Bureau, "PSB"). Other sites say these permits are issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, and that the permit can be obtained through an agent on submission of a copy of a passport and Chinese visa. Nowhere have I been able to find exactly what I need to do to obtain the permit - appears that most people travel to Tibet as part of an organized tour and the permit is arranged as part of the package.
I will make calls in the morning but if you find out something please call me (no matter the time)at 303 329 2904. Take care.

Jim, Sorry to learn that you're getting water in the gasoline, it's crocked Chinese mind at play, you might run into similar problem along the way, the more you travel away from big cities, the more problem you'll have. The poor gasoline quality will hurt the engine of a car expecially foreign car.
Miller suggested not to fill up in any gas station, but looking for big gas station with many pumps, their name should spelt out some like this:
CPIE (China Petroleum Import/Export) along with "Shell" logo on it. Some small town gas station with a couple of pumps and a sign says "Shell", I guarantee you, they're not Shell.

Hi Jim and Fred,
Just looked up your site, as I know you started from Beijing this morning. See your city navigation is no better after 16,000m of practice though! Please say hi to all our friends there eg Tom and Rosalie G, Malcolm P, Tim and Wendy F (no report on their site yet),Chris and Linda,The Fakhras, Don G, Jingers,Greg W and Jo and JB. I have almost certainly omitted someone, sorry.
Will check progress regularly and expect a high level of reporting even with no internet for miles around. Just send out a goat with a note.
Ireland was a fab event but tiring.
I hope to meet Jo+JB after China.
Send ticket if you want a proper navigator(just kidding).
Bon voyage,
Jonathan+Anna
